Menu bar & running in the background

Why closing the window doesn't quit Selv, and how to actually stop it.

Closing the window doesn't quit Selv

Selv keeps running after you close its window — capture and everything else continue in the background. This is deliberate, not a bug: Selv is meant to be there when you come back to it.

The menu bar item

Look for Selv's icon in the menu bar. It shows Selv's current state at a glance (ready, locked, starting, or degraded) and gives you:

  • Open Selv — brings the window forward, launching Selv first if it isn't running.
  • Settings… — opens Settings directly.
  • Quit Selv Completely — the reliable way to stop everything: a clean shutdown of Selv in full, not just closing what's on screen.

Cmd+Q isn't the same as "Quit Selv Completely"

Pressing Cmd+Q while the main window is focused closes that window's process, but doesn't fully stop Selv the way Quit Selv Completely (from the menu bar) does. If you want Selv entirely stopped — before a reinstall, for troubleshooting, or just to free up resources — use Quit Selv Completely rather than Cmd+Q.

Pausing capture isn't in this menu

The menu bar item doesn't control capture. To pause screen or audio capture, see Pause, exclude & delete or the Activity dashboard's Tracking toggle in Activity.
