  1. Version 0.12.0

    Opening Windows

Selv for Windows enters beta, and closing the gaps between Mac and Windows is a focus of this version. It also rolls up everything new on the Mac since 0.11.0.

    New

    • Selv for Windows is now in beta testing.
    • While Selv works on a question it shows what it is doing as it happens, then what it found and how long each step took, and folds it into "Thought for…" above the answer.
    • Tell Selv where to look first: pick a source with @ and it searches there before everything else. Change the sources or time while it works, press Enter, and the same question runs again.
    • Point a question at one meeting: type @ and pick a meeting from the last 30 days, and Selv answers from that meeting only.
    • Ask in your own words to add, move, rename or cancel an event. Selv shows the change and waits for you to confirm it, and asks when it cannot tell which event or time you mean.
    • Unlock Selv with Touch ID alone, with no separate password. Turn it on in Settings > Account > Privacy lock.
    • Activate a license by pasting the link from your receipt in Account settings.
    • Setup opens on your side of the world at night, turning into the Selv mark.
    • While your models download, the Local AI step shows a neural network at work behind it.
    • Each setup step shows the feature at work: scrolling back through Recall, a transcript taking shape, an answer about your week.
    • If you postpone part of setup, a Finish setting up card in the sidebar takes you back to it.

    Improved

    • Selv starts opening your library as soon as you begin typing a question, so the answer starts sooner.
    • Recall keeps speech in time order with speaker names, a zoomable timeline and app visits, and scrolls screen and audio together.
    • Recall opens right away. Saved screens and speech appear as each is ready, with one action to grant capture access.
    • Questions about a weekend, a month or an upcoming date search the notes written for that period.
    • Choose a response length from the chat controls.
    • Download local AI models later, with clear explanations of which features need them.
    • Capture settings are simpler: one speech model and your own transcription languages.
    • Unlocking Selv returns you to where you left off instead of Search.
    • Setup starts the model download first and keeps going while you set up the rest, with progress shown at the top.
    • Name, appearance, languages and your data sources are now one setup step.
    • Setup buttons look and read the same on every step, and "Do this later" is always the quiet option.
    • Setup keeps its two-part layout in smaller windows and stays centred in large ones.
    • When a model download stops, setup says why in plain words and keeps the retry in reach.
    • Connecting a browser responds instantly, and Selv says when an import is waiting instead of showing an error.
    • A calendar question that opens a conversation is answered from your calendar even when it is not phrased the usual way, for example "What's on the calendar for next Tuesday?".
    • Calendar questions are also recognised later in a conversation, including short follow-ups such as "And on Wednesday?" after a calendar question.
    • Calendar questions understand weekday names in every language you chose during setup.
    • Calendar answers in chat are easier to read: one line per entry, "All day" for all-day entries, and no empty descriptions or account types.
    • The first item in the sidebar is now called New.
    • The background pattern stays calm and no longer follows the pointer.
    • The animated dot background does less work per frame on the lock screen, a new chat and setup.
    • Security hardening across encryption key storage and on-disk data handling.

    Fixed

    • Screen and audio capture, Activity tracking and background indexing now start on Macs where the background service could not launch before.
    • Connecting Apple Mail, Notes or browser history now puts Selv in the Full Disk Access list.
    • "Restart to update" reopens Selv after installing instead of leaving the app shut.
    • Activity tracking reports a recoverable error instead of staying on Starting.
    • Checking for updates no longer reports a failure while a new version is waiting for you.
    • A Teams call in an answer's sources is named after the person or meeting.
    • A message typed into an open conversation stays in that conversation instead of starting a search.
    • "Next Tuesday" asked on a Tuesday means the Tuesday after, not the same day.
    • Choosing a different transcription model in setup now downloads the one you chose.
    • Putting off the model download no longer leaves the speech model out of the later download.
    • Putting screen capture off during setup, or declining it under Finish setting up, stays the last word.
    • After locking Selv with Touch ID or Windows Hello during setup, going back no longer offers to leave Selv without a lock.
    • The name and languages you entered in setup are kept when macOS restarts Selv for Full Disk Access.

    Heads up

    • Pressing Enter while Selv is answering no longer stops it. Use the Stop button or Esc. Picking a source with @ now searches it first; tap the chip to search only there.
    • If capture has never worked on your Mac, open Recall after updating and choose Enable screen and audio. macOS will ask you to allow Selv once.
    • After you switch on Full Disk Access for Selv, macOS asks you to quit and reopen Selv once.
  2. Version 0.11.33

    See where Selv is looking

While Selv searches it now tells you what it is doing, and it starts getting ready as soon as you begin typing a question.

    Improved

    • Selv starts opening your library as soon as you begin typing a question, so the answer starts sooner.
    • While Selv searches, it now shows what it is doing: opening your library, loading the search model, and where it is looking.
    • Download local AI models later, with clear explanations of which features need them.

    Fixed

    • A Teams call in an answer's sources is named after the person or meeting, no longer shown as "Chat | name | Microsoft Teams".
    • Setup buttons use pill shapes and model details stay out of the default view.
  3. Version 0.11.32

    Fixed

    • Checking for updates no longer shows "Update failed" and "You're up to date" while a new version is waiting for you.
  4. Version 0.11.31

See what Selv is doing, and steer it

While Selv works on a question it now shows each step it takes. You can tell it where to look first, and change that while it is still working.

    New

    • While Selv works on a question it shows each step, what it found and how long it took, then folds it into "Thought for…" above the answer.
    • Tell Selv where to look first: pick a source with @ and it searches there before everything else.
    • Steer while Selv is working: change the sources or time, or add a few words, press Enter, and the same question runs again with your change.
    • If the place you named has nothing close, Selv shows the best match it found elsewhere and asks if that is the one.
    • Point a question at one meeting: type @ and pick it, and Selv answers from that meeting only.

    Heads up

    • Pressing Enter while Selv is answering no longer stops it. Use the Stop button or Esc.
    • Picking a source with @ now searches it first instead of only there. Tap the chip to search only there.
  5. Version 0.11.30

    Touch ID without the password

Selv can now lock with Touch ID alone, keeps Touch ID after your Mac was locked, and returns you to where you left off when you unlock.

    New

    • Unlock Selv with Touch ID alone. No separate password to remember; turn it on in Settings > Account > Privacy lock.

    Improved

    • Touch ID can be switched on and off for an existing password in Settings.
    • Unlocking Selv returns you to where you left off instead of Search.
    • Security hardening across encryption key storage and on-disk data handling.

    Fixed

    • A setting you change is no longer undone by another setting saved at the same moment.
    • Selv no longer forgets Touch ID after it locks while your Mac is locked.
  6. Version 0.11.29

    A steadier start

A startup step that failed on some launches now completes, and the diagnostics report says more about speech-to-text.

    Improved

    • The diagnostics report says whether speech-to-text is ready to run.
    • Security hardening across encryption key storage and on-disk data handling.

    Fixed

    • A startup step that failed on some launches now completes, so Diagnostics stays clear.
  7. Version 0.11.28

    Fewer dead ends in setup

Connecting Mail, Notes or browser history no longer strands you in System Settings, and Recall and Settings reflect what capture is actually doing.

    Improved

    • Apple Mail tells you when Mail has no mailboxes on this Mac instead of asking for access again.

    Fixed

    • Connecting Apple Mail, Notes or browser history now puts Selv in the Full Disk Access list, and the prompt explains how to add it by hand if macOS leaves it out.
    • Recall's audio tab no longer offers "Start capture" while audio capture is already running.
    • The Screen switch in Settings and the recording toggle in Recall now always agree.

    Heads up

    • After you switch on Full Disk Access for Selv, macOS asks you to quit and reopen Selv once.
  8. Version 0.11.27

Capture turns on once you allow it

After you allow Selv in System Settings, screen and audio capture now turn on by themselves, from Recall, from Settings and during setup.

    Fixed

    • Screen and audio capture turn on after you allow Selv in System Settings, instead of asking for access you already gave.

    Heads up

    • If you already allowed Selv and capture still did not start, open Recall after updating and choose Enable screen and audio once more.
  9. Version 0.11.26

    Capture works on every Mac

Screen and audio capture, Activity tracking and background indexing now start on every Mac, updates reopen Selv on their own, and Capture settings are simpler.

    Improved

    • Capture settings are simpler: one speech model, your own transcription languages with search to add more, and fewer technical switches.
    • Diagnostics no longer shows red for things that are switched off or not part of your install.

    Fixed

    • Screen and audio capture, Activity tracking and background indexing now start on every Mac. On many Macs the background service could not launch at all.
    • "Restart to update" reopens Selv after installing, instead of closing the window and leaving the app shut.
    • After an update, Selv no longer shows a "no newer release" message, and What's New opens smoothly instead of stuttering.
    • The Audio switch in Settings turns capture on, asks for access when it is needed, and explains any problem.
    • When screen capture, audio capture or Activity tracking cannot start, Selv now says why and what to do next.

    Heads up

    • If capture has never worked on your Mac, open Recall after updating and choose Enable screen and audio. macOS will ask you to allow Selv once.

    • Questions about a future date search what you wrote before it, not only today's entries.
  12. Version 0.11.23

    Future-date questions

Ask about an upcoming date and Selv searches what you wrote before it, not only today.

    Fixed

    • Activity startup can be cancelled and retried after a timeout without leaving the toggle on Starting.

    Fixed

    • Keep the approved gold flow unchanged from lockscreen to search.
    • Restart after updates now waits for the app and background service to close in the correct order.
    • Touch ID opens after cold-launch window focus settles.

Fixes microphone startup and unnecessary background audio work, and brings the full app search interface to Option-Space.

    Improved

    • Stop processing empty system audio and retire inactive audio taps promptly.
    • Option+Space uses Selv's full search and chat interface, keeps your work visible when you click away, and focuses the composer when opened.
    • Turning Audio off stops system audio too and saves your choice before microphone shutdown finishes.
    • Let your Mac sleep while Selv captures in the background, retire inactive audio taps, and prevent update preparation from waiting indefinitely for an unresponsive helper.

    Fixed

    • Fix a microphone startup stall that could cause sustained CPU load during and after calls.

    • Updates have their own contrasting card and no longer hide Upgrade Plan.
    • Start updates directly, follow download progress, and see what changed after restarting.
    • Diagnostics distinguishes recovered startup delays, retryable failures, and missing historical screenshots.

    Fixed

    • The menu bar menu stays compact and shows only Screen and Microphone capture indicators.
    • Notes checks spelling with macOS and offers corrections that support undo.
    • Activity tracking stays off until you turn it on and reports when it cannot start.
    • Touch ID starts when the window gains focus and uses clearer English and German unlock wording.
    • The sidebar and menu bar now reflect update progress and stop offering versions already installed.
  42. Version 0.10.1

    A better first start

Ask questions before adding sources, explore the offline Guide, and share one support report when something goes wrong.

    New

    • Ask general questions without adding personal sources or granting capture permissions.
    • Read the bundled offline Guide, with answer links opening the relevant documentation section.

    Improved

    • Create one support report with app version, model readiness, permissions, search status and the last answer attempt. Preview and copy it from Send feedback.
    • Shorter setup, clearer permission choices and model downloads that resume after interruptions.
    • Security hardening across license validation and entitlement handling.

    Fixed

    • First-question suggestions now submit the selected question.
    • Answer errors distinguish an empty library from unavailable search, unfinished downloads and model or response failures.
    • Fixes an Apertus 1.5 model-loading problem and an error after an answer connection disconnects.
    • Capture opt-outs remain saved when the background helper is unavailable.
    • App updates preserve the start of your existing trial.
  43. Version 0.10.0

    The first beta

Selv is ready for its first new Mac: guided setup, private on-device AI, and signed beta updates.

    Improved

    • Beta updates arrive through the dedicated beta release channel.
    • Setup selects and verifies a transcription model suited to your Mac's memory.

    Fixed

    • First launch now walks through the complete setup, with reliable model downloads and retries.
  44. Version 0.9.50

    A call-aware microphone

    Improved

    • Microphone recording now defaults to detected native calls, with Automatic, Always on and Off controls and a persistent microphone indicator. Browser calls can use the manual override.
  45. Version 0.9.49

    Improved

    • Typing-rhythm analytics are now opt-in, off by default, and limited to your journal — with a one-tap way to clear any data already collected.
  46. Version 0.9.48

    Search anywhere is back

The Option+Space search panel works again, shortcuts have one home, and toggles are easier to read.

    New

    • Screen and audio share one Recall timeline, with independent controls and one synchronized image.
    • Recall brings Screen, Audio and saved pages together around the time you select.
    • Open contributing screenshots from screen-page sources, including verified links for older saved chats.
    • Open cited notes, transcripts, screenshots, and conversations beside the chat in source tabs.
    • Questions about your activity can show measured charts with coverage and comparisons.
    • See every plan and check out without leaving Selv: the plans overview and checkout now open inside the app.
    • Chats can be forked, archived and marked unread from their menu; letter keys pick menu items.
    • Chats in the sidebar show a status dot: hollow when read, blinking while an answer is being written, gold when an answer finished while you were elsewhere.
    • Your chats now live in the main sidebar under Recents, with a Pinned section on top and your account card always visible at the bottom. The separate history panel is gone.
    • "+ New" at the top of the sidebar starts a chat. ⌘N does the same, ⌘B shows or hides the sidebar, ⌘[ and ⌘] go back and forward, ⌘, opens Settings, ⌘/ lists the shortcuts.
    • Show/hide sidebar is back beside the window controls, with back and forward arrows. Hover the sidebar button while it is hidden to peek at the sidebar.
    • Hover a sidebar view for a magnifier that opens a keyword search limited to it: Notes, Audio, Screen, or the Graph filter.
    • Selv can name your recorded meetings from your own calendar — turn on Apple Calendar under Data Sources. It reads the calendars already on this Mac; nothing is sent anywhere and no events are stored.
    • Meetings, calls and videos are now single recordings in the Audio tab instead of a wall of 30-second fragments — with their real length, a note when one was interrupted and resumed, and a rename option.
    • The shortcut recorder warns when a combination is already used by macOS.

    Improved

    • Audio sources open without passage matching blocking the interface, and repeated transcript labels are hidden.
    • Single-fact recall requests ask for a brief cited answer without unrelated details or recaps.
    • A fixed, faintly shimmering background appears only on lock and chat.
    • Inline sources return for answer text supported by saved evidence.
    • Questions about pages you viewed today can search newly recognized screen text before indexing finishes.
    • Full-window gold waves respond to activity while chat text stays readable.
    • Interface and retrieval improvements are consolidated into one Selv app.
    • Chat sources use the shared screen and audio panel while keeping your conversation in place.
    • Narrow recall searches rank the selected period and preserve the named source, including repeated-letter spelling mistakes.
    • First searches build the keyword index much faster for multilingual text.
    • The sidebar reaches the top of the window, and conversation titles appear above chats and fade in the sidebar.
    • A shared halftone background connects the lock screen and onboarding to the first search, then fades away.
    • Pause background animations when Selv is not active to reduce unnecessary work.
    • Release idle search memory even while background refreshes continue.
    • Ask shows Selv logo motion, elapsed time and first-response timing.
    • Return unused native memory to macOS after releasing a vector index.
    • Keep the background daemon from appearing as a second Selv Dock icon.
    • Background indexing can save new embeddings without keeping the entire search index in memory.
    • Selv releases more search memory between jobs and reports background processing progress more reliably.
    • Background index checks avoid retaining an extra copy of search data.
    • Reduced memory used by the graph and by idle search services.
    • Cancelling local AI work waits for its GPU task to finish before releasing memory.
    • Silent recordings no longer load the large transcription model, and dictation waits for scheduled work to finish.
    • Opening a cached graph avoids copying the full vector archive into memory.
    • Models load for scheduled work and release their memory when it finishes.
    • Index saves avoid repeatedly rewriting the entire search archive.
    • Searching your recordings no longer shows the same sentence twice when a call was picked up by both the microphone and the speakers.
    • A voice the app cannot yet place is shown as an unknown speaker rather than guessed.
    • Speaker grouping for long, all-day sessions is now near-instant and no longer balloons memory.
    • The plans page is short and clear: same-height tiles, one-line features, prices and buttons aligned, and the same orange as selv.io.
    • The plans page fills the window, with a yearly/monthly switch, plain-language tiers and the same words you see on selv.io.
    • The sidebar's upgrade tile and menus use the same quiet glass card as the rest of the app.
    • Upgrade is a glowing tile above your account instead of a button squeezed into it.
    • The shortcut sheet shows one key per cap, with the return symbol.
    • Sidebar menus open instantly.
    • Recents and Pinned can be collapsed and searched from their headers.
    • Show/hide sidebar and the back/forward arrows now sit in the title bar right beside the window controls.
    • Notes can be pinned or moved under More like the other views.
    • Graph, Audio, Activity and Screen sit under More. "Edit sidebar" pins the ones you use to the top.
    • Switching to Notes while an answer is still streaming no longer cuts the answer off.
    • Meetings and calls are named after the meeting itself now, not after whatever window you happened to be looking at while it recorded.
    • Keyboard shortcuts live in one place: the shortcuts sheet, where Search anywhere can be switched and rebound.
    • Toggles are easier to read when on.
    • About shows what matters to you, not build internals.

    Fixed

    • Recall keeps available screen keyframes during passive viewing and can resolve moments beyond the overview limit.
    • Chat source links preserve the cited moment and open its original medium first.
    • Screen recall distinguishes unfinished processing from a completed search with no answer.
    • Screen Recall loads saved screenshots reliably and lets you retry an unavailable image.
    • Background capture can be repaired from the canonical app without opening your journal.
    • Consolidation keeps one Selv.app and routes conversation diagnostics to it.
    • Source tabs follow their conversation and restore when you return.
    • Screenshot citations keep the exact frame when opening the timeline.
    • Retrying an empty answer no longer leaves an error sentence before a successful response.
    • Source rankings are no longer displayed as confidence percentages.
    • Screen recall filters captured question-and-answer keys before selecting evidence.
    • Scrolling-page excerpts preserve complete numeric amounts and their source-frame links.
    • Screen search removes repeated questions before ranking and keeps relevant details from scrolling pages in the answer context.
    • Dated fact questions no longer add unrelated activity summaries.
    • Screen searches include grouped screen evidence and respect selected sources and dates.
    • Changed salary figures and short screen additions are preserved when assembling viewing sessions.
    • Image loading failures have accurate messages and retry, and uncited answers no longer attach an unrelated image.
    • OCR and transcript ingestion start correctly after Selv launches while the Mac is locked for a long time.
    • Background indexing recovers after Selv starts while the Mac is locked.
    • Screenshot text processing no longer stays paused just because the search index makes the app larger than 500 MB.
    • Overlapping audio excerpts merge without mixing speaker attribution.
    • Charts that finish after you change conversations update the original answer.
    • Test copies can no longer take over the background capture helper.
    • Naming a speaker on a conversation names that voice across every part of the conversation, not only the recording you tapped.
    • A video or meeting no longer shows a second card of the same name for the microphone side of the recording.
    • When the microphone catches only the tail of a sentence playing on the speakers, it no longer appears as a second speaker.
    • Speakers in a recorded conversation are labelled consistently across all its parts, instead of a new "Speaker 1" on every part.
    • People from your voice profiles are no longer named on video narrators, and a speaker Selv could not identify is shown as unknown instead of as the app that was playing.
    • Older recordings from before per-app audio capture no longer show a separate "Microphone" entry beside the app that was playing.
    • Selv no longer freezes for minutes after each new recording while it works out who was speaking.
    • Speakers in videos and other media are no longer labelled with names from your voice profiles; meetings are unaffected.
    • Older videos and meetings no longer show a separate "Microphone" entry beside them.
    • Selv no longer writes gigabytes of unnecessary data in the background, which was making the app slow and unstable.
    • Watching a video no longer produces three or four separate entries for the same audio, and a video no longer starts with the tail of the one before it.
    • Teams meetings are named properly again, two calls an hour apart no longer collapse into one recording, and your microphone audio joins the meeting instead of sitting in a separate "Microphone" entry.
    • Chat history that had disappeared from the sidebar is back; the list is rebuilt from your saved chats and can no longer be blanked.
    • Notes stays pinned in the sidebar after editing it.
    • A meeting no longer splits into separate cards for the microphone and the meeting audio, and a meeting that runs past its calendar slot keeps its own ending instead of being filed under the next one.
    • Your own side of a call is no longer thrown away. Microphone recordings made during meetings were being deleted as duplicates of the meeting audio, which they never were.
    • The Audio tab shows your whole recording history again — it used to stop after the most recent few hours with no sign that anything older existed. Scroll down (or use "Show earlier recordings") to keep going back.
    • Questions about a time period ("last week", "in July") can now find answers in your recordings — transcript evidence was being dropped from the answer whenever a journal entry matched too.
    • Search anywhere (Option+Space) opens Selv over any app again.

    Heads up

    • The ⇧⌘N shortcut that brought Selv to the front has been removed.
    • Calendar is now called Notes. List, Statistics, Health and custom journals moved behind the developer unlock for now.
  47. Version 0.9.47

Search without freezes, permissions asked once

    New

    • Clean up empty recordings from the Audio page — it shows you what it found before removing anything.

    Improved

    • Typing quickly in search no longer queues a full search for every character you type.
    • Security hardening across on-disk data handling and search indexing.
    • Graph nodes say what they came from, and the popup lands where your cursor is.
    • Screenshots show up in the graph popup, with the full text that was on screen.
    • Coming back to the graph is instant, and it no longer replays its intro.
    • Screen and audio permissions are requested once, during setup, by the part of Selv that records.

    Fixed

    • Keyword search stays responsive while it scans your journal.
    • Search results whose match sits on the first line of a note, screenshot or transcript show up again.
    • Opening a graph node in Screen Recall or Audio goes to that exact moment.
    • The graph loads reliably on every launch.
  48. Version 0.9.46

    Lighter on memory

Selv keeps a single copy of its search index in memory, and unloads its chat model while your Mac is locked — then loads it again the moment you're back.

    New

    • Diagnostics has a "Copy failing only" button that copies just the components that need attention.

    Improved

    • Selv keeps one copy of the search index in memory after loading it, not several.
    • While your Mac is locked, Selv unloads its chat model and loads it again when you come back, so an unattended machine stops paying for it.

    Fixed

    • Settings search finds the audio status rows and the Feedback section.
  49. Version 0.9.45

    No more frozen window

Working out who was speaking in a recording now runs in the background, is about a thousand times faster, and looks only at the newest samples.

    Improved

    • Speaker grouping for long, all-day sessions is near-instant and no longer balloons memory.

    Fixed

    • The window stays responsive after each new recording while Selv works out who was speaking.
  50. Version 0.9.44

Answers that show, and a calendar that counts

Answers cite their sources inline, show the screen captures and notes they came from, and explain the plan Selv followed to find them. Apple Calendar can be switched on as a source.

    New

    • Apple Calendar can be switched on as a source: meetings, invites and plans become searchable (attendee names, never email addresses or meeting IDs), show up as cards in answers, and count toward the day's context.
    • Answers can show a screen capture or a quoted note right under the text — the source itself, not just a citation.
    • Tap a source chip, a capture, or a row in "sources" to open where it came from.
    • Answers can include a chart of your own measurements, with your average marked, when the question calls for one.
    • Answers show the plan Selv followed to find them, and a reasoning model's thinking, in a collapsible panel.
    • Code in answers renders as a real code block with line numbers and one-click copy.
    • Type @ in the search bar to filter sources, or / for quick commands like New chat and dictation.

    Improved

    • A capture whose image has expired still shows its app and time, with the text kept.
    • The activity dashboard shows screen-on time and active-input time as two numbers instead of one.
    • Time away from the keyboard is counted as idle instead of active.
    • Answers cite their sources inline, with a sources summary under each answer, and render bold, lists and quotes properly.
    • The search composer sits on a frosted glass card, and menus, sources and code blocks share one borderless tile look.
    • Source citations show as filled pills with glowing icons, and the sources list reads name, date and match at a glance.
    • Source and time menus open instantly as clean glass panels, with "All sources" selectable like "All time".
    • The conversation follows along while an answer streams in, so its sources are visible immediately.
    • Website icons in Screen Recall are drawn on your Mac instead of being fetched, so browsing stays entirely local.

    Fixed

    • Time away from an unlocked Mac counts as idle from the moment you stopped, and an app popping up while you are away no longer counts as you using it.
    • Answers no longer show empty "no capture data" rows.
  51. Version 0.9.43

    Steady on

    Fixed

    • Selv no longer crashes while tracking which app you are using.
    • Opening Selv right after quitting it brings the window up on the first try.
  52. Version 0.9.40

    Tell us when something breaks

    New

    • Selv tells you when something goes wrong, with a one-click way to report it — anonymously, or with your email if you want a reply.
    • Send feedback from Settings → General.

    Improved

    • Asking a question right after new content was indexed no longer waits for the whole search index to reload.
    • Data Sources and AI Agents are separate Settings pages, each saying plainly which way your data moves.
    • Your recovery key lives on the Account page, with a clear explanation of why it matters.
    • Deleting your data lives in one place, under Storage.
    • The Models page (was "AI") is named for what it holds.

    Fixed

    • The Upgrade button opens the pricing page.
  53. Version 0.9.39

A stronger passphrase, a clearer promise

    Improved

    • Security hardening across encryption key storage and on-disk data handling.
    • The key escrow screen says plainly what the passphrase protects and that nobody can reset it for you.
    • Backups stay on your Mac by default. Sending copies to iCloud is a choice you make deliberately, not something Selv assumes.
    • Choosing a passphrase shows you while you type whether it is long and strong enough, and can generate a strong one for you.

    Fixed

    • Searching stays responsive when your question mentions a time period.

    Heads up

    • New backups go to a folder on your Mac. Anything already in iCloud stays exactly where it is until you decide to remove it.
  54. Version 0.9.38

    Selv in the menu bar

    New

    • A Selv item in the menu bar shows whether Selv is ready, opens Settings, and can quit Selv completely — even with the window closed.

    Improved

    • Answers come back much faster, especially the first question after a break — Selv keeps its chat model ready in the background instead of loading it when you ask.
    • The app stays responsive while Selv thinks — answers stream from a background service instead of the window.
    • While searching, Selv names only the sources you actually picked.

    Heads up

    • Selv now does its heavy work in a separate background process, so the window keeps responding while it thinks. A second Selv in Activity Monitor is expected.
  55. Version 0.9.37

    Permissions, per agent

    New

    • Each connected AI has its own permission sheet: pick which sources it may read (screen, browser, meetings, journal, and more) with per-app and per-site rules, one-tap presets, and Touch ID confirmation for the private tiers.
    • Diagnostics shows exactly which model Selv is keeping ready and why, with a switch to turn it off.

    Improved

    • Security hardening across encryption key storage and on-disk data handling.
    • Background indexing, screenshot text recognition and data imports run substantially faster.
    • Selv checks that its background helper is running from the installed copy of the app, and says so if it is not.
    • Selv keeps whichever model you are most likely to need next — dictate twice in a row, or type twice in a row, and the second one starts noticeably faster.
    • Journal, meetings and health data stay unreadable to connected AIs unless you switch them on for that specific connector.

    Fixed

    • Launch no longer waits behind the index health check when the search index is busy catching up.
    • Dictating no longer interrupts a meeting recording that is being transcribed at the same time.
  56. Version 0.9.31

    Search Anywhere

    New

    • Press Option+Space in any app to search your memory and copy sourced excerpts, ready to paste into any AI chat. Rebindable under Settings → General → Search Anywhere.

    Improved

    • The Option+Space search uses the same search engines as the app — exact words and names hit reliably.
    • Filter by source and timeframe, and watch live progress while it searches.
  57. Version 0.9.30

    Dictation, faster

    Improved

    • Dictation is faster — the background helper transcribes on the speech model it already has loaded, instead of the app loading a second one.
    • Dictation pauses background transcription while you speak, so live text keeps up.

    Fixed

    • The last thing you say before stopping dictation is kept.
    • Background transcription releases the speech model as soon as it is done with it.
  58. Version 0.9.28

    Who wrote what

    New

    • New journal entries, chats and chat imports record who wrote each part — the groundwork for asking Selv about a specific person.
    • Meetings and calls register in your activity timeline together with their speakers.

    Improved

    • Asking about Claude, ChatGPT or other apps by name searches your screen history too.
  59. Version 0.9.27

    One Connections page

    Improved

    • Settings has one Connections page for everything Selv talks to — the apps it reads from, and the AI clients allowed to read it — kept clearly apart so you can always see which way your data moves.
    • Capture has the on/off switch and the settings for each thing Selv observes in one place.
  60. Version 0.9.26

    Your whole journal, searchable

Anything you add to a journal entry later in the day is now indexed alongside the morning's writing, and earlier days are caught up automatically.

    Fixed

    • Search and Ask-AI find everything you added to a journal entry after it was first indexed that day.

    Heads up

    • The first launch after updating quietly re-indexes any journal days that were incomplete. It runs in the background and only touches what is missing.
  61. Version 0.9.25

    Settings you can search

    New

    • Settings has a search box — type what you are looking for instead of hunting through the pages.

    Improved

    • Connect your AI apps to Selv in one click — Claude, Cursor, VS Code and more — from Settings → Agent Access.
    • Settings no longer shows internal maintenance controls.

    Fixed

    • "Manage subscription" opens your Account page.
  62. Version 0.9.24

    Agents knock. You decide.

    New

    • AI agents need your Touch ID before they can read your data — one approval per agent, good for an hour, and every ask is logged.
    • A small dot flashes in the menu bar whenever an AI agent reads from Selv — so agent access is never invisible.
    • Settings → Agent Access: choose whether agents need Touch ID, and see every consent prompt — asked, approved, denied — in one list.

    Improved

    • Connecting an app explains what it can and can't do in plain language, shows its real icon, and offers to restart it so the connection works right away.
  63. Version 0.9.22

    Search, reimagined

    New

    • Search is the home screen — one box for keyword search and questions about your data, with chat-style follow-ups.
    • Ask-AI shows what it is doing while it works ("Looking through your notes…") and streams answers into a clean thread with copy, save-to-notes and regenerate.
    • Switch the chat model right from the search box.
    • A living thinking orb shows what Selv is doing while it answers.

    Improved

    • Journal results expand in place so you can read the whole entry, and screenshot results stop repeating near-identical hits.
    • Tidier shell: the sidebar hosts Settings and its own collapse control.

    Fixed

    • Long questions wrap properly; Shift+Enter inserts a newline; Enter sends.
    • Answers render correctly when your notes contain umlauts or curly quotes.
  64. Version 0.9.20

    Every update, explained

Selv now tells you what changed. Each new version opens a short summary of what shipped, and you can page back through the whole release history from the version number in the sidebar.

    New

    • The version number in the sidebar opens a What's New popup showing what changed in each release, with Previous and Next to walk back through the history.
    • Settings, under About, has a What's New button that opens the same release history.
  65. Version 0.9.1

    Model switching, for real

    Improved

    • The version shown in the sidebar is read from the app bundle itself, so it is always the version you are really running.

    Fixed

    • Switching the chat model in Settings swaps the model immediately, with no restart needed.
  66. Version 0.9.0

Apple Health, better voices, sharper search

A big one. Health data from your iPhone, speaker names that stick across recordings, and a long list of retrieval improvements that make search find what you actually meant.

    New

    • Apple Health data from the iOS companion flows into Selv and shows up alongside the rest of your day.
    • Speaker profiles are adopted per voice cluster instead of per recording, so one person keeps one name across a conversation.

    Improved

    • Long search queries are used in full instead of being cut off at 512 tokens.
    • Result diversity is computed from embeddings rather than word overlap, so you get genuinely different results instead of near-duplicates.
    • Search handles umlauts and inflected word forms, so German phrasing works as well as English.
    • Large searches got noticeably faster.
    • Clipboard and health history are stored with the same page-level encryption as the rest of your memory.

    Fixed

    • Chat citations open the source they actually came from instead of always jumping to the journal.
  67. Version 0.8.20

    Everything is a source

Selv stopped being a journal that also searches and became a memory of the material you actually work with.

    New

    • Documents on your disk — PDF, Word, RTF and more — are read and indexed, so search reaches inside them.
    • Browser history, shell history and your own git commits are indexed alongside everything else.
    • Reminders flow in from macOS, and you can point Selv at folders to watch for new files.
    • Years of older activity history can be imported from ManicTime.

    Improved

    • Screenshots are de-duplicated before they are stored, cutting disk use sharply without losing anything you would want back.
    • Screen history keeps its text and search index while older images age out on a schedule you control.
  68. Version 0.8.19

Permissions that stay, transcripts that prove themselves

    Improved

    • Screen Recording permission stays granted across updates — the background helper has an identity macOS recognises as the same one each time, so you grant it once.
    • Transcripts are integrity-checked when they arrive, and any transcript that fails its check is flagged in Settings for the rest of the session.
  69. Version 0.8.18

    Storage discipline

    Improved

    • Captured material stays inside the storage budget you set.
    • Security hardening across encryption key storage and on-disk data handling.
  70. Version 0.8.15

    No more freezes

    Improved

    • Heavy work moved off the thread that draws the interface, so Selv stays responsive right after unlocking and while it thinks.
  71. Version 0.8.2

One-click licensing, one Selv at a time

    New

    • Licenses activate in one click straight from the email, instead of copying keys between windows.

    Improved

    • Settings → About shows exactly which build you are running.

    Heads up

    • Only one Selv build can run at a time — opening a second copy tells you which one is already running.
  72. Version 0.8.0

    Who said what

    New

    • Recordings are split by voice, so a conversation is attributed to the people in it instead of arriving as one undifferentiated wall of text.
    • A Data Sources section in Settings shows exactly what Selv is allowed to see, with guided setup for the permissions it needs.

    Improved

    • The background helper became a proper login agent, so macOS asks for permission once rather than once per component.
    • Transcription runs in its own isolated process, so a failure there cannot take the app down with it.
  73. Version 0.7.0

    Context, not just keywords

    Improved

    • Search reads passages in context rather than isolated fragments, so results carry enough around them to make sense on their own.
    • Long operations show how much time is left instead of leaving you guessing.
    • A new colour palette, and Selv follows your system light or dark setting by default.
  74. Version 0.6.11

    Meetings, in any language

    New

    • Meeting recordings are grouped into conversations instead of loose clips.

    Improved

    • Spoken language is detected properly, and recordings in another language can be translated.
  75. Version 0.6.9

    Faster everywhere

    Improved

    • Encryption uses your Mac's built-in hardware acceleration — reading and writing protected data is dramatically faster.
    • Chat streams write only the conversation you're in, briefly batched, instead of rewriting every conversation for each word.
    • Screenshot text recognition does much less redundant background work.
  76. Version 0.6.0

Transcripts, and a graph you can walk

Transcription arrived under the same rules as everything else: processed on your Mac, stored encrypted, and only with the permissions you grant.

    New

    • Conversations can be transcribed on your Mac, with a transcript browser for reading them back.
    • The knowledge graph became explorable — a real map of what connects to what, drawn locally.

    Improved

    • Transcription moved into a separate background helper, so it keeps working without holding the rest of the app hostage.
    • Encrypted storage gained runtime guards that refuse to open a database with the wrong key rather than failing quietly.
  77. Version 0.5.8

    Teaching it to read

    Improved

    • Selv divides your writing by meaning rather than by paragraph breaks, so retrieval works on ideas instead of arbitrary chunks.
  78. Version 0.5.5

    Concepts and citations

    New

    • Answers cite their sources — every claim points back to the entry it came from.

    Improved

    • Selv notices concepts that recur across everything you write, and enriches new material as it arrives instead of in one slow pass.
  79. Version 0.5.0

    Encrypted by default

The release where private stopped being a promise and became the only code path there is.

    New

    • A first graph view of your material, rendered on your machine.

    Improved

    • Every record is written encrypted, under a separate key for each day.
    • Chat sessions are encrypted the same way, each session sealed on its own.
    • A single design system drives every colour and spacing value in the app.
  80. Version 0.4.5

    It remembers

The retrieval pipeline ran end to end for the first time: your own writing, embedded and searchable, without a byte leaving the machine.

    New

    • Ask a question, get an answer drawn from what you actually wrote.
  81. Version 0.4.0

    The model moves in

The decision that shaped everything after it: the language model runs on your Mac, not in someone else’s data centre. Slower to build, and the only version worth shipping.

    New

    • A language model bundled with the app and running entirely on-device.

    Improved

    • The first retrieval pipeline — text extraction, chunking, embeddings and vector search — all of it local.
  82. Version 0.3.0

    A place to actually write

    New

    • Sidebar, calendar and search. Selv became something you could use every day rather than a demo.

    Improved

    • Encrypted backups, and atomic writes everywhere: nothing is written in place — it is written beside, then swapped in.
  83. Version 0.2.0

    Locked by default

Seven weeks in, the thing that had to be true before anything else could matter.

    New

    • Entries are encrypted at rest, with keys held in the macOS Keychain.
    • Touch ID unlock, and the app locks itself the moment it loses focus.
  84. Version 0.1.0

    First commit

Selv began as a private journal for macOS, built on one rule that never changed: your material stays on your machine.

    New

    • The first working version — a local, encrypted journal.

    Improved

    • Automated security scanning was wired into the build on day one, before there was much of an app to scan.

A little less searching.
A little more living.
