Privacy Policy

1. Who is responsible
This policy covers the Selv application, selv.io and our licence and support services. Louis Hein, trading as Selv · Switzerland is responsible for personal data we receive to operate the website and provide those services. Contact privacy@selv.io about this policy or your data.
Your local memory and the information we receive to operate our business are different. Using Free does not require a Selv account. Buying or activating Sovereign, subscribing to updates or contacting support does give us the information described below.
2. Your local memory
Depending on the sources and permissions you enable, Selv can process notes and imported documents, microphone and system audio, transcripts, screenshots and recognised text, app and window activity, browser or calendar context, clipboard history and typing activity. These are stored on your device for the on-device features. Local transcription, search and local-model answers do not require uploading this content to us.
Capture controls and macOS permissions determine which sources are available. Some sources can contain other people's information or sensitive personal data. Choose sources and exclusions accordingly. App, window and typing activity can be processed locally to build your memory; these records are not behavioural usage analytics sent to us.
We do not receive a copy of your local memory simply because you use the app. Sharing it through an external tool, an export, a backup destination or a support request is a separate action.
3. Optional connections and sharing
When you connect an external AI tool or another service, the context made available to that tool may be sent to its provider, including a cloud-model provider. Those providers' terms and privacy practices apply. Review what you enable and the access you grant; local storage does not make a connected provider local.
If you connect Notion, Selv requests pages from Notion using a token you supply. If you connect IMAP mail, including Proton Mail through Proton Bridge on this Mac, Selv signs in read-only to the host you configured and stores copies locally. Apple Mail import reads local Mail.app files and does not contact a mail server.
Health and Statistics are not included in the public launch. Some earlier or separately supplied test builds include optional Apple Health sync. If you use such a build and enable that feature, permitted health, workout and related location records can pass through your private iCloud storage to your Mac. Apple handles iCloud under its own terms; these records are not sent to Selv's website or licensing servers.
If you choose a cloud or other external backup destination, that destination receives the backup you configure. Exports are stored wherever you choose and can be shared by you. These optional paths are separate from local capture and search.
4. Security and local retention
Selv encrypts its memory databases and protected file stores on your Mac. Keys are generated locally and stored using macOS Keychain. This does not mean every temporary file or user-created export is encrypted: captured audio can be held in unencrypted local files during processing and retention. Local diagnostic files can also contain technical information.
Local retention and deletion depend on the content type and your settings. Free's search window is an access limit, not a promise to delete older memory. Retention settings, your own deletions, backups and available disk space affect what remains. Keep your Mac protected and use the app's retention controls for content you no longer need.
We cannot recover a local memory store or encryption key that we do not hold. Uninstalling Selv alone may leave application data and backups behind. Manage those separately when removing your data.
5. App diagnostics and network requests
Public releases of Selv do not have an automatic crash-reporting endpoint configured and do not send automatic crash reports or behavioural usage analytics to us. If you send a diagnostic report to support, we receive what you choose to include. Review reports before sending them.
The app can contact model download hosts, including Hugging Face and GitHub, during setup and model downloads. Some supporting models are downloaded automatically on first use. Those hosts receive normal request information, such as your IP address. Licensing contacts selv.io as described below. When update checks are enabled, the app asks selv.io whether a newer build exists; installing a release you accept is a separate step. From version 0.11.0, Settings → Diagnostics → Network activity shows a local, redacted log of connections the app starts, including optional Notion and IMAP traffic you enable. That log stays on your Mac. The signed update installer, other apps and a connected tool's own cloud requests are outside that list.
Optional services have the network activity described in section 3. A written list of paths is published with the product documentation.
6. Purchases and licence activation
Paddle is our authorised reseller and merchant of record. Paddle collects the payment and billing information needed to complete a purchase, issue a receipt, handle tax and prevent fraud. The Paddle entity identified at checkout is responsible for that processing under Paddle's Privacy Policy. We do not receive or store full payment card details.
To deliver and support a licence, we receive and store your purchase email address, customer and transaction identifiers, plan, purchase and update-entitlement dates, and payment, refund or revocation status. Activation also sends a randomly generated installation identifier and operating-system information. We keep activation and deactivation records to manage a licence and moving it between devices.
These records are stored using Turso. Licence and service emails are delivered using Resend. Licence requests do not include your notes, recordings, transcripts or search queries. Normal web request information may be processed by our hosting service when the app contacts the licence service.
7. Website, email updates and support
Our website is hosted on Vercel. Serving and protecting the site involves processing technical request data, such as IP addresses, requested pages, browser information and error logs. We also use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to understand page visits and site performance. These services collect website information such as visited pages, referrers, browser and operating-system type, approximate country and performance measurements. They do not receive your local Selv memory.
Vercel's website analytics do not use tracking cookies. They are separate from the local app. We do not use advertising pixels or sell your personal data for advertising. The site may store functional preferences in your browser, and Paddle's checkout uses its own technologies under its policies.
If you join the email list, we use your email address to send availability news and product updates through Resend. You can unsubscribe using the option in an email or by contacting us. A purchase also generates licence and service emails needed to deliver and support the product.
If you contact us, we receive your contact details, message and any attachments you send. Do not include private captured content unless you want us to review it for your request.
8. Why we use information
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on performance of a contract to deliver and manage licences, consent for optional marketing email, legitimate interests to operate and secure the website and respond to support requests, and legal obligations where records must be retained or disclosed. You may withdraw consent to marketing at any time without affecting earlier processing.
We use service providers for hosting, data storage and email delivery. They receive information needed for those services. Paddle separately handles the purchase as merchant of record. We may also disclose information where required by law or necessary to establish or defend legal claims.
Providers may process information outside Switzerland or the European Economic Area. Applicable provider agreements and lawful transfer safeguards govern those transfers. Contact us for information about safeguards relevant to data we hold.
9. How long we keep information
We keep licence and entitlement records as needed to honour and administer your licence, including a perpetual licence. Transaction records may need to be retained for applicable accounting, tax, fraud-prevention or legal obligations. A deletion request does not automatically erase records that we are legally required to keep.
We keep email-list information while you remain subscribed. After an unsubscribe, limited suppression information may be retained to honour that choice. We retain support messages as needed to resolve and follow up on the request and address legal obligations. Website technical records are retained according to the relevant service's configuration and operational needs.
Your local memory follows your app settings and your own storage choices; it is not subject to a server-side deletion schedule operated by us.
10. Your choices and rights
Depending on the law that applies to you, you may request access, correction, deletion, portability or restriction of personal data we hold, object to certain processing, and withdraw consent. Contact privacy@selv.io. We may ask for information needed to verify that a request concerns your data.
Manage local app content through the available capture, deletion and export controls. Ordinary app export features depend on your plan and the access state of the memory. This does not limit statutory rights over personal data we hold on our systems.
You may complain to your local data protection authority. In Switzerland, you can contact the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC).
11. Children and policy changes
Selv is not directed at children under 16. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us so we can address it.
We will update this policy when our practices change and publish the new date. We will provide notice of material changes through the website, app or an appropriate direct channel. Where a new use of personal data requires consent, we will ask for it before that use begins.
